2013 Ford Focus
Part of the thrill of owning a hot hatchback is that it’s both fun and frugal, so it should come as little surprise that Ford’s 2013 Focus ST gets good gas mileage. With final numbers from the EPA in hand, however, Ford is claiming a fuel economy victory and best-in-class mpg.
The EPA’s final estimate is that the 2013 Focus ST will get 23 mpg city, 26 mpg combined, and 32 mpg highway. That’s much lower than the naturally aspirated 2012 Ford Focus, which gets 26 mpg city, 30 mpg combined, and 36 mpg highway. The Focus ST has a good reason for being less frugal. Actually it has 92 reasons: while the 2012 Focus makes 160 hp, the upcoming 2013 Focus ST makes 252 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. Ford says the performance-oriented Focus ST will top out at 154 mph.
Keeping the Focus ST’s 23/26/32 mpg figures in mind, you’ll find that the new hot hatch scores well above most other hot hatchbacks. That includes the Volkswagen GTI (21 city/25 combined/31 highway), the VW Golf R (19 city/22 combined/27 highway), the Mazdaspeed 3 (18 city/21 combined/25 highway), and the Subaru Impreza WRX hatchback (19 city/21 combined/25 highway).
Only one turbocharged/hot hatchback beats the ST, and it’s the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, with 26 mpg city, 30 mpg combined, 38 mpg highway. That said, the Veloster Turbo only makes 201 hp — 51 fewer than the Focus ST — has one fewer door, and costs about $2000 less. If you consider the Veloster Turbo and Focus ST to be competitors, then the Focus ST isn’t quite the absolute best-in-class in terms of fuel economy. If, however, you stack the Focus ST against turbocharged hot hatchbacks with at least 250 hp on tap, the ST is the most efficient competitor by a sizeable margin.
The 2013 Focus ST isn’t yet available, but Ford dealers are currently taking orders. Ken Block, star of the Gymkhana videos, has a Focus ST on order. The latest video, Gymkhana 5 was released earlier this week. Block says he is excited for his own Focus ST, after using one to scout out locations in San Francisco for his latest hoon video staring his Ford Fiesta H.F.H.V. (Hybrid Function Hoon Vehicle). Prices start at $24,495 including destination.
