The Ford Escape is a compact 4-door SUV that joined the Ford lineup in 2001. The Escape Hybrid made its debut in 2005, identical in all aspects to a standard Escape, but with an electric motor and gasoline engine with a combined output 155 horsepower. For 2008, the Escape retains the same drivetrain but receives a total makeover inside and out, adopting styling changes that resemble its rugged siblings, the Ford Explorer and Ford Expedition.

The Escape Hybrid is powered by an Atkinson-Cycle 2.3-liter Duratec 4-cylinder engine combined with a 70-kilowatt electric motor. The Hybrid's 133-horsepower gasoline engine achieves greater fuel efficiency with the Atkinson-cycle combustion process. The software control system has been improved for a better transition between gasoline and electric operation. Towing capacity is estimated at 1,000 pounds, as against a V-6 Escape which can tow up to 3,500 pounds. The powertrain remains unchanged, but a new electric power-steering system reduces the load of conventional hydraulic assist, thus improving fuel economy as well.

The Escape Hybrid exterior now resembles a Ford Explorer, featuring a bolder, rugged design, high beltline, raised hood and a new front fascia; headlights sweep up toward the front corners of the vehicle to short side marker lights. Roof pillars are blacked out; taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The cabin features a revised dashboard with “a top of dash” display, improved center console, Electric Power Assisted Steering system, and blue gauge backlighting. An auxiliary audio input jack is now standard.

Standard safety features include front-impact airbags, front passenger side-impact airbags, curtain style head-protection airbags for all outboard seats, rollover protection system with roll stability control, dynamic stability control, four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS)  and a tire-pressure monitor.
