Ford Works On 9- And 10-Speed Transmissions

Recently, Ford Fusion announced that they would be working with another auto manufacturer in a collaboration to create 9- and 10-speed automatic transmissions. The current U.S. government mandate that all automakers producing vehicles in the U.S. must have an average of 54.5 MPG by the year 2025, has created an opportunity for auto entities to work together to make huge steps towards environmental protection. As the 54.5 MPG mandate is about 70% higher than the current average of 22.8 for most auto manufacturers, automotive engineers must begin paving the way to the technology that will fill the gap.

Details have not yet been released by the automakers, we do know that Ford will be in charge of developing the 10-speed transmission for rear-wheel drive vehicles while GM takes care of the 9-speed transmission for front-wheel drive vehicles. The vehicles that are usually rear-wheel drive are trucks, SUVs and performance vehicles. For more information about Ford powertrains, or to take a look at any Ford vehicle, contact Harris Ford.
